LA RAMBLA, Los Angeles County — La Rambla is a distinctive pocket of county-governed land inside San Pedro. Its history helps explain why its residents do not fall under the same municipal system as most neighboring streets.
According to an LA County historic context study, Arcadia Bandini inherited 340 acres in 1892. She and her husband, John T. Gaffey, developed the land; the family established Hacienda La Rambla in 1906. The neighborhood’s Spanish name comes from the historic property. The original residence was demolished in 1964, and the site was subsequently developed for a YMCA.
From streetcars to medical offices
Early interurban streetcars connected La Rambla to the expanding San Pedro area. San Pedro General Hospital opened in 1925 at West 7th Street and Patton Avenue, creating a medical-services center that would change names over time.
When San Pedro was annexed to Los Angeles in 1909, La Rambla remained outside city limits. A later annexation effort in 1979–80 met organized neighborhood resistance and did not proceed. The area remains unincorporated today. These dates describe historical developments, not a new 2026 boundary proposal.
